When would my pet need anesthesia?
Not every scan requires anesthesia, and a lot depends on your pet. Their temperament, the type of imaging, and whether they're in pain all factor in. For many pets, an oral sedative such as gabapentin or trazodone given before the appointment is enough to ease stress and help them stay comfortably still, so we can capture clear images and get you answers faster.
X-ray
Often awake
Many pets need little or nothing for X-rays. Those who are painful, anxious, or unable to hold still may need injectable sedation, so we can get a clear image safely and without a stressful visit.
Ultrasound
Usually awake or lightly sedated
Most pets tolerate ultrasound comfortably, often with just a pre-visit oral sedative. Some procedures, like fine needle aspirates, or anxious pets may need injectable sedation.
CT
Sedation to general anesthesia
CT scans are fast, so lighter sedation is often enough to keep your pet still. Depending on the type of study and the patient, some scans call for general anesthesia to capture clear, detailed images.
MRI
Requires general anesthesia
MRI takes longer and requires your pet to stay completely still, so it's always done under general anesthesia. This is where a board-certified anesthesiologist's oversight matters most.
